For an Easy Chai Tea Latte at Home
Homemade chai tea is worth savoring. It’s a combination of black tea with warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, anise and cardamom. Depending on the brand of chai tea bags you use, it may include other ingredients like black pepper and/or cloves.
Add a touch of maple syrup or honey, vanilla and frothed milk to the mix and take this flavorful sipper to a whole other level. It’s no wonder this classic has become so popular!
This recipe is similar to my homemade London Fog Latte recipe. With a simple swap in tea bags, we’re making an easy and delicious homemade chai tea latte.

How to Make a Chai Tea Latte At Home Using Tea Bags
step by step

Lattes are known for their warm frothed milk. You can achieve this by using the frothing wand on an espresso machine or with an electric handheld frother in warmed milk.

Traci’s Tips
- For a Stronger Tea: I found this recipe delicious with two tea bags. However if a stronger chai flavor is desired, you can use three tea bags.
- Milk of Choice: The sky is the limit here. Use your favorite plant milk, I use homemade Unsweetened Cashew Milk, or whole dairy milk. If using plant milk, you’ll notice a bit of separation of milk and tea after setting for a few minutes, but it’s easily swirled back together again. Oh a whim, I made this recipe into a chai breve by making it with half and half. It creates an ultra rich, dessert like tea with major frothiness!
- Double or Triple: Sharing with a friend(s)? You can double or quadruple the recipe, brewing on the stovetop in a sauce pot rather than a tea cup.
5 Minute Chai Latte with Tea Bags
Ingredients
- 8 ounces (227 grams) Water
- 2 Chai Tea Bags*
- 4 ounces (113 grams) Milk or less for a stronger tea. use plant or dairy milk, I use homemade cashew milk.
- 2 teaspoons Pure Maple Syrup, honey or sweetener of choice, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Instructions
- Bring the water to just under boiling: 208 Fahrenheit (98 Celsius). Steep the tea in a 12 ounce (340 grams) tea cup or coffee mug until it's dark and fragrant, four to five minutes. Press the tea bags against the side of the cup to drain. Discard the bags.
- While the tea steeps, froth the milk with sweetener of choice using a handheld electric milk frother or steaming wand of an espresso machine. If using a handheld frother, gently warm your milk before frothing.
- Pour the vanilla extract into the tea, then pour in the warmed frothed milk into the mug. Top with foam and if desired, a sprinkle of cinnamon over the top.
- Enjoy right away, warm.

I prefer cold drinks, how would you make this in an iced version?
Hi Lisa! I’d never thought of that but tried it after I saw your note! Same proportions, cold brewed in the fridge overnight, enjoyed the next morning with cold milk. Delicious!
